Cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCP)

The cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody or anti-CCP test is an assay that detects the presence of antibodies to citrullinated epitopes in the blood. Anti-CCP belongs to the larger group of ACPA tests that are integral components of the classification criteria for rheumatoid arthritis published by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) in 2010.

Anti-CCP antibodies are serological markers for diagnosis and prognosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), they are sensitive and specific diagnostic markers in early and fully established disease. They may predict the eventual development into RA when found in undifferentiated arthritis and are related to erosive disease in RA. CCP antibodies may be detected in healthy individuals years before onset of clinical RA. They are important for early detection and diagnosis of RA. That may lead to immediate aggressive treatment of the disease, preventing irreversible joint damage.

Commercial anti-CCP tests use various combinations of not further specified synthetic cyclic peptides, their sensitivities ranging from 70 to 78%. In contrast to that, ORGENTEC’s Anti-CCP hs (high sensitive)® is based on specific optimized peptide epitopes from the body’s own MCV protein. This tailored antigen profile gives the test the highest sensitivity of about 92% while maintaining the known high specificity.
